New in Sandi Land!
Jodi answers the question: Who is John Galt?
We had a great time at our first mixer in the new clubhouse…just a reminder that the mixers are happening every month, the third Tuesday from 4-7. This month is “Everything BACON” and happens tomorrow, 11/20/12. Please join us, bring a friend, and bonus points for something yummy with bacon. RSVP and invite your friends on Facebook via this link.
Save the Date: Holiday Party December 18th!
I’m also in planning mode for our Holiday Party (December 18th, 2012 – RSVP HERE) starting at 4pm with an open house and Silent Auction (yes, we are accepting donations for items to include in the auction). Last year we had an amazing time – and this year will be even better since it will be back in our InSights clubhouse. We have also booked live entertainment beginning at 7pm – Captain Ivory and our friend Robbie Bolog will be entertaining us with their very cool sound, a musical performance sure to include their interpretation of Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire and a few more surprises in store. Robbie (Author of The Red Pants Epiphany). We hope you’ll be joining us! Save the date!
An Al Perspective
Play Cashflow 101 at InSights
We are very excited to have regular games of Cashflow 101 played at InSights regularly. Kathy Jerore hosts a game the first Sunday of the month, and Al is hosting games as often as people would like to play…we’ve played this past Saturday, and again on Sunday. The purpose of the game is to learn passive income strategies and get you thinking about investing and money in a whole new way. If you are interested in being on the “game” list, please send a note or let us know and we’ll let you know when we get a group together to play. We plan to have games weekly, and you can play anytime it fits your schedule. High School Age are also welcome to participate!
Cashflow 101 is an educational tool in board game format designed by Robert Kiyosaki (author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad), which aims to teach the players concepts of investing by having their money work for them in a risk free setting (play money) while simultaneously increasing their financial literacy and stressing the imperative nature of accountability.
There are two stages to the game. In the first, “the rat race”, the player aims to raise his or her character’s passive income level to where it exceeds the character’s expenses. The winner is determined in the second stage, “the fast track”. To win, a player must get his or her character to buy their “dream” or accumulate an additional $50,000 in monthly cash flow.
In place of “score cards”, there are financial statements. The game requires the players to fill out their own financial statements so that they can see more clearly what is happening with their money. It generally shows how assets generate income and demonstrates that liabilities and ‘doodads’ are expenses.
The Red Pants Epiphany – How a pair of red pants taught me a valuable lesson.
The Plane Ride
It was finally over. An incredible journey that took me from the red double-deck buses of London, to a drunken late-night taxi ride to “Asia” on the streets of Istanbul, had finally reached its conclusion. There I was in a plane parked on the tarmac of New York’s JFK airport, waiting to taxi to the runway and embark on the final leg of my flight home to Detroit. I was riding an all-time high after 70 days of nonstop adventure, and was eager to tell any and everyone around me about it.
Enter Sandi, world traveler, social marketing guru, and my seat mate on the flight to Detroit. Our conversation, which started as simple small talk about our respective adventures in Europe, quickly transitioned into one of the most informative and fascinating discussions I have had in a long time (so much so that I began taking notes on my iPhone after the first hour of talking). The real meat and potatoes of our conversation began when Sandi asked me what I was going to school for (film and media studies, and marketing) and we started talking about the changing world of marketing in the Facebook/Twitter era. I brought up some of my favorite authors and entrepreneurs who have excelled in this new business model and was surprised to hear that she had read and followed many of the same people. Some of these new “influentials” in the social media era include:
- Tim Ferriss – world traveler, and NYT’s bestselling author of “The Four Hour Workweek” and “The Four Hour Body”, as well as blogger extraordinaire.
- Gary Vaynerchuk – Host of Wine Library TV, The Daily Grape, and author of “Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion”.
- Seth Godin – serial bestselling author and marketing savant.
- Tony Hsieh – CEO of Zappos.com and author and creator of the Delivering Happiness movement.
- Derek Sivers – Founder of the music distribution site CDBaby and advocate of assuming you are below average.
As it turned out Sandi was quite connected in the marketing industry in the Metro-Detroit area, and helps run a social media advising company called Insights-Group (who is also generously hosting this blog for me). She was the perfect person to talk to, and when we finally landed two and a half hours later, I realized that I had just made a valuable connection in my field.
And then I looked down and realized I was wearing the ridiculous skinny, bright red pants that I had bought during the course of my summer abroad…more on this later on.

Video Corner: Kickstarter
Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of ambitious, innovative, and imaginative projects that are brought to life through the direct support of others.
Since our launch on April 28, 2009, over $350 million has been pledged by more than 2.5 million people, funding more than 30,000 creative projects. If you like stats, there’s lots more here.
What’s the magic for a successful kickstarter project?
