100 Marbles #2

New in Sandi Land!

It’s been a busy week since the last 100 Marbles. Election day found Sandi and Al on a plane bound for New Orleans, where they toured the city, ate amazing Peanut Butter Burgers at Yo Mama’s Kitchen (yes, every day), and attended the International Pool and Spa show while waiting for news of the local elections, you might be interested in reading [confessions of a former political ostrich].

The surprises at the show may have been running into people who recognized the Pool Guy from his famous YouTube channel and website (both in the show and on Royal Street), and finding the innovation in the last year to be a bit sluggish. There were even some old throwbacks including Pool Tonic (catchy branding, but a dated message), as well as some things in the new product showcase that didn’t pass Pool Guy approval. In any case, it was an great time – and the perspective of Bourbon Street from a Balcony is worth a look.

The wait in the airport for the return flight back home included sightings of Kevin Sorbo and John Goodman. Who knew that more movies are being made in New Orleans than LA these days? Our shuttle bus driver, that’s who… [visit our trip photo gallery].

We both enjoyed the street performing Uncle Sam (above). The self control it took to stand in that position for any stretch of time is simply mind boggling. Talk about being present in the moment, and perfectly still.

An Al Perspective

I don’t build in order to have clients…I have clients in order to build. – Howard Roarke

Trust the Process, Trust the Builder, Says Saline Pool Owner
(Saline, Mich.) – For Troy Baars, water has been a lifelong companion. An avid boater, water has always been a big part of his summer months. Since his current home is not near any lakes, and his kids are a great age to take full advantage of it, he decided the time was right to build a custom pool and turn their backyard into a summer fun spot.
This was the beginning of a challenging process of interviewing pool build… [read more]

Mastermind Corner

Jessie Palmatier

Last night, I took my first walk into the world of MasterMinding–and I’m never turning back. I don’t think I could explain it even if I tried, but I can say it was life-changing. Coming into the meeting, I had no idea what to expect. I knew the InSights group was full of cool people with good things to say. I knew some of those cool people would be there and I knew there would be (equally cool) college students there, too. So I expected some interesting conversation and, as always happens when I’m talking with InSights members, I expected to think.

What I didn’t expect was…[read more]

Book Corner: Thank You Economy

The Thank You Economy is about something big, something greater than any single revolutionary platform. It isn’t some abstract concept or wacky business strategy—it’s real, and every one of us is doing business in it every day, whether we choose to recognize it or not. It’s the way we communicate, the way we buy and sell, the way businesses and consumers interact online and offline. The Internet, where The Thank You Economy was born, has given consumers back their voice, and the tremendous power of their opinions via social media means that companies and brands have to compete on a whole different level than they used to.

In a not surprising turn of events, we found the video where Tom Harris originally interviews Sandi Maki about the must read book The Thank You Economy by Gary Vaynerchuk. [watch the video]

Video Corner: Meeting Gary Vaynerchuk

We were lucky enough to meet Gary at his office in Wine Library [watch video] on a special trip to New Jersey. It also happened to be the same trip where we met and spent time with Seth Godin [and Al got the car towed]. What an amazing trip with two very special and talented people. Sandi admits to being a bit nervous about meeting Gary. He is so enthusiastic in his talks and video interviews she was not sure how overwhelming he might be in person. He was genuine, warm, welcoming, yes, very high energy, and extremely hospitable. We can’t say enough great things about this guy, and would recommend you read and watch everything about him. It’s so worth your while. With that in mind, check out this video where Gary answers Sandi’s question [What do you wish people asked you more] and then follow it up with [this one], as Gary shares some of his life story, thoughts about being an entrepreneur, and his lifelong dream to own the Jets.
